Two years ago, I claimed specific relationships between mass media map types, the functions they played, the locations they had in newspapers and some other attributes (Ormeling 1997). Since then these hypothetical relationships were researched and ascertained by a MSc student, Christiaan de Waal. This paper is a joint presentation of Mr De Waal’s research results. The hypotheses have been extensively tested statistically, but the conclusions would not have stood out so well but for Mr De Waal’s visualisation expertise. The diagrams I will be presenting here have been based as well on his originals which I have merely translated.
  1. Starting point
  2. How can the developments be described both quantitatively and qualitatively?
  3. Is there a correlation between the newspaper map theme on the one hand and the map function, the newspaper section that contained the map and the newspaper map type?
  4. Is there a difference in characteristics between weekdays newspaper maps and those contained in newspapers in the weekend?
  5. Has there been a geographical trend in the development of newspaper maps?
  6. Final Remark and Literature
